Internship Project: Motion Graphics at Hey Kiddo

This internship focused on using motion to extend an existing brand system for a children’s learning platform. I created animated characters and badge assets that aligned with Hey Kiddo’s visual language while adding warmth, clarity, and personality through movement.

Internship Role & Focus

At Hey Kiddo, I worked as a Motion Graphic and UI/UX Design Intern, where I brought playful brand characters to life through dynamic animations. Using Adobe After Effects, I created motion graphics that aligned with the company’s mission of making learning engaging and fun for kids.

The challenge was to create flat, static illustrations and transform them into lively, expressive characters and badges. I followed the principles of animation (anticipation, squash and stretch, and timing) to design movements that felt natural, approachable, and delightful for young audiences.

Design System Alignment

All motion work was designed to fit seamlessly into Hey Kiddo’s existing brand ecosystem. I followed established guidelines for color, proportions, and character expression to ensure new assets felt cohesive rather than decorative or standalone.

This approach helped strengthen the overall visual system while allowing room for playful variation.

CHARACTER ILLUSTRATION & BADGE DESIGN

I extended the brand by creating new characters that align with the established style (bright colors, simple shapes, and approachable forms), yet bring unique variations to enrich the overall identity.

I also designed and animated custom badge illustrations used to reward learning milestones. These badges were created to feel celebratory while remaining visually consistent with the rest of the product.

Early sketches and drafts were used to explore form and personality before moving into animation.

Collaboration

Partnered with the Head of Content and Design Lead to align storytelling and visual style, iterating through sketches, prototypes, and exported animations.

Motion Graphics

Motion decisions were guided by clarity and emotional tone rather than visual complexity. Animations were designed to feel natural and encouraging, especially for a young audience.

By applying core animation principles, I focused on creating movement that supported usability and delight without distracting from learning.

Outcomes

Reflection

This project deepened my understanding of how motion, illustration, and design systems work together to create cohesive experiences. I learned how to design within constraints, extend an existing visual language, and use motion intentionally rather than as decoration.

Collaborating with cross functional partners strengthened my ability to receive feedback, iterate quickly, and contribute meaningfully within a professional design environment.
